Prince Harry Jokes About Trump During Surprise Appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The Duke of Sussex, 41, stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on Wednesday, Dec. 3, after Colbert jokingly ranted about the rise of "problematic" royal-themed Christmas movies. Wandering onto the stage, Harry comedically said he'd become lost while searching for an audition for The Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska. When Colbert asked why an actual prince would want a role in a Hallmark-style film, Harry teased, "You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?" Colbert, 61, pushed back on the idea of an American obsession, giving Harry the opening for his sharpest line of the night: "Really? I hear you elected a king." The line was a reference to the ongoing controversy that's followed Trump this year. Back in February, Trump referred to himself by the royal title in a post on Truth Social. The official White House Instagram account followed suit by sharing a fake Time magazine cover depicting Trump wearing a crown with the headline "Long live the king." Soon-after, the "No Kings" movement started, with participants pushing back what they have claimed are Trump's antidemocratic policies and authoritarian power grabs. Two protests were held — one on June 14, to coincide with Trump's birthday and a D.C. parade honoring the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, and another on Oct. 18, amid the government shutdown. As Harry's skit on Colbert continued, he doubled down on his desire to star in a Christmas film listing the lengths he’d go to land the fictional role. "I’ll record a self-tape, I’ll fly myself to an audition, settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House — all the things you people in TV do." "Hey, I didn’t do any of those things," Colbert responded. "Maybe that’s why you’re canceled," joked Harry. The audience understood the reference, a wink at CBS’ $16 million legal settlement in July with Trump over allegations that the network deceptively edited a 2024 interview with his presidential election opponent, Kamala Harris. Colbert openly criticized CBS on The Late Show for their sizable settlement. Three days after his remark, the network announced The Late Show would end its run, citing "financial reasons" tied to broader cuts across Paramount. This is the second time Harry has visited The Late Show. Despite his digs this time around, Harry – who has been raising children Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, with wife Meghan Markle in Montecito, California, since stepping back from their roles as working royals in 2020 — has previously said he remains neutral in American politics. Speaking at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles in February, he told the audience he was "not on the left or right," explaining "I’ve never even been allowed to vote!" Still while discussing leadership more broadly, Harry spoke about the "detrimental effect" that can occur when "basic morals and empathy are abandoned in favor of power and control." "Now this would be a great time to talk about how a sickness in leadership across sectors — politics to tech — can have a detrimental effect on millions, if not billions, of people," he said. Earlier this year, when Harry faced public scrutiny over whether disclosures in Spare about past drug use should have affected his U.S. visa, Trump said he had no plans to pursue Harry’s removal from the country — but used the moment to take a swipe at the duchess.
