The Prince of Wales refused to be drawn on the scandal surrounding his uncle when speaking to reporters during his trip to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize. In his first visit to the country, William landed in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his environmental award, the Earthshot Prize. He told journalists that he wants to surround himself with people “who want to do good”. William was quizzed by veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour and was diplomatic in his answers during a “fireside” chat. Amanpour referenced a previous interview William gave on Apple TV where he said that when he was king, he would pursue “change for good”. “Change will come by backing them, not by what I do.” To rapturous applause from the audience, William added: “I want to surround myself with people who want to make change and do good in the world.” Royal experts commended the Prince of Wales for his decision not to be drawn into talking about Andrew. “Unlike Harry, William doesn’t air the family laundry in public,” one insider commented. During the chat, William spoke passionately about the planet and the future for young people around the globe. He said: “You have to provide leadership and a vision that there’s good things to come and it’s not all negative. “And for my children, particularly, knowing that the planet’s going to be in a better, healthier state because of the people in this room is something I love to tell them when they go to bed. “It’s going to be great, your future is going to be as bright as futures gone by and that’s a really important message for all us to hear.” “A world without hope and a world without positivity is a pretty depressing place,” he added. During his visit to Brazil, William also heaped praised on King Charles at the COP30 eco talks — in his first speech on behalf of his father. He also hailed the Princess of Pop Kylie Minogue as she joined him at his £50million Earthshot Prize event. William then flew from Rio with Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, who also attended his event, to COP30 in Belem in the Brazilian rainforest. In a speech, he told world leaders the planet was at “a pivotal moment in human history”. The heir to the throne also recreated an emotional scenic picture featuring his mother, Princess Diana, while visiting the city’s Christ the Redeemer statue. And in a touching moment, William was left holding a baby after a mum pushed her ten-month old son into his arms. William’s trip coincides with Prince Harry’s trip to Toronto, Canada, to pay tribute to the Armed Forces and meet with Canadian reservists. The trip, which is planned every year around Remembrance Day, saw the Duke meet with soldiers from two of the country’s most historic Reserve units. It comes just days after King Charles stripped his brother of his “Prince” title following renewed scrutiny of his links to Epstein.
